Welcome to Black Badger Advanced Composites!

My name is James Thompson, I’m a 36 year old industrial design MFA originally from Vancouver, Canada. I’m based out of Göteborg, Sweden, a country I have lived in for the last 10 years now. I work with a wide range of design projects, having advanced materials as a common thread. Modern jewlery design is the main focus, in particular bringing new and innovative materials into the marketplace. This allows me to create unexpected moments of pure visual joy.

Everything on this website is handmade by myself, often direct to client specs. This level of personal attention and the relationships that result are an aspect of my business I am very proud of.

Welcome again to the world of James Thompson and Black Badger Advanced Composites!

James out and about

  • Bell & Ross BR01 on a vintage WW2 Swedish army ammo leather strap by Rob Montana. The leather final made its way back to Sweden
  • The mighty thunderhawk ponders his empire
  • Incoming weather in the Göteborg harbor
  • Great pic I just found on the phone of @simoncudd on the way to BaselWorld in Switzerland :) Lookin good matey!!
  • Was so impressed with this facade that @christianriedl and I took them up on the offer! Turns out it was a REALLY cool office of architects and advertising people. Coolest place I've been to in ages
  • #bellrosswatches #watches #instagram #ig #igersweden #hdr #bw #dial #snapseed #sweden #sverige #scandinavia #göteborg #gothenburg #design
  • Not a bad morning commute! Meeting with @christianriedl this morning. The new Göteborg power couple ;) ha ha
  • Behind the scenes pics as I figured crap out on the Gesshoku photoshoot today
  • Photoshoot today with some new works. This pair of my carbon fiber / Corian / G10 Tron-inspired rings is a wedding pair for a couple in Holland
  • My dear friends, I promise you there is nothing harder than photographing carbon fiber, and getting all the elements of the material structure. Unless you try and do it in the dark. With something else glowing. Seriously. FML. FML in the A
  • Setting up for a low-light photoshoot of the finished Gesshoku chopsticks. More pics coming later!
  • Moustache approval rating?
  • Elegant structure within the carbon fiber cross-section
  • Sushi in the dark? Well duh, of course!
  • Detail view of my Gesshoku carbon fiber chopsticks. Totally handmade, this design highlights the cross section of the solid carbon fiber plate they are made from. Hellah cool :)
  • Not totally finished yet, but here's the first pics of my new Gesshoku chopsticks. Gesshoku (spelling?) is the Japanese word for a lunar eclipse. These are milled from solid carbon fiber composite plate and feature details in Moonglow photoluminesent polycarbonate. Didn't really plan on making these for sale, but I'd estimate around $500usd a pair.
  • Två svenska sweethearts :) awwwwwwwwwwwww
  • The head section of the first chopstick has been milled and is now ready to have the color bands stacked. Skillz like a Jedi dentist ;)
  • Carbon fiber sushi chopsticks in the works today. Epic.
  • @christianriedl , my ambassador of FuckYeah lays down the law over pints
  • Rocking the Grenson Freds with the Commando sole
  • @michaelspiers yup orange is everywhere right now mate!
  • Showing some swedenlove while carrying my bike down to the beach last night
  • Ok now this is seriously cool. A client sent us in a nice pic of his BadgerBones watchstrap that Carl Evans and I made for him last summer. Just to let us know that it stood up the punishment of 9g maneuvers in his French Air Force Mirage fighter jet. Ha ha ha, coooooool :)
  • Twice the Fuckyeah!
  • Erik takes a pause to enjoy the shore on our bike club ride this evening
  • Running with the big boys today
  • Website is finally back online! Improvements, more designs and a crapload of spellcheck inbound!! Feedback welcome my friends!!! Www.blackbadger.se
  • Kviberg, an old military fort near downtown Göteborg
  • The Chocolate Rocket finally arrives at my studio! Airbrushing by @tattoomikesv
  • A few of my 3-layer G10 rings. One of my early designs, really refreshing to get some orders for these. A break from damned carbon fiber!
  • #singlespeed #bars #bricklanebikes #snapseed #igersweden #instagram #ig
  • New bullhorns and bartape from Brick Lane Bikes. The Chocolate Rocket is finally done! First ride today as well!
  • Howdy Sweden!
  • Moustache pic from few months ago. Ha ha ha
  • Out and about in the spring sun today!
  • Spring has really arrived here in Göteborg! Went for a bit of a walk with @mahaloellie this afternoon
  • 1940s Swedish design style in @jeppemedkniven apartment
  • Fun little project I made to celebrate a collaboration with a designer from Denmark. Not really happy with the result, but that's just me. This took two full days and is about 12 individual pieces milled and slotted together.
  • Scaffolding on the neighbors building

As you can see there is a complete rebuild going on here at blackbadger.se! I’m an industrial designer, not a website designer, so it’s taken far longer than it should have. My sincere apologies for this.
